Everything you need to know about Char Dham Yatra
The Char Dham Yatra typically lasts from late April to early November. May to June (Pre-Monsoon Season) offers ideal weather with moderate temperatures and is best for elderly pilgrims and families. September to October (Post-Monsoon Season) provides clear skies and pleasant weather with lesser crowds. July to September (Monsoon Season) is not recommended due to frequent rainfall, landslides, and risky travel conditions.
The standard travel route is: Delhi → Haridwar/Rishikesh → Barkot (For Yamunotri) → Janki Chatti → Yamunotri (By Road & Trek ~6 km) → Uttarkashi (For Gangotri) → Gangotri (By Road) → Guptkashi/Sonprayag (For Kedarnath) → Gaurikund → Kedarnath (By Road & Trek ~16 km) → Joshimath → Badrinath (By Road) → Rishikesh/Haridwar → Delhi. Alternative helicopter services are available from Dehradun via Sahastradhara Helipad.
The official opening dates for the Char Dham temples are typically announced in April. The temples usually remain open from late April/early May to early November before closing for winter due to heavy snowfall. Pilgrims are advised to check official announcements for the exact opening dates each year.

Health and safety tips include: Spend time acclimatizing at intermediate altitudes to prevent altitude sickness, drink warm water frequently, practice deep breathing and Pranayama exercises, trek at a comfortable pace with breaks, carry thermals, windproof jacket, gloves, and raincoat, keep a personal medical kit with altitude sickness tablets, wear anti-skid waterproof trekking shoes with walking stick, carry emergency contact numbers and power bank, travel with companions, avoid alcohol and smoking, stay at authorized lodgings, and follow government guidelines.
Standard transportation includes SUVs and buses for road travel. Alternative helicopter services are available from Guptkashi, Phata, and Sirsi for Kedarnath. Roads are winding and at high altitudes, so motion sickness medication is recommended if needed.
