Everything you need to know about Do Dham Yatra
The best time to go for the Kedarnath-Badrinath Yatra is from May to October when the weather is pleasant and conducive for long pilgrimages. The temples are open during this period, and the roads are clear. The peak pilgrimage season is from May to June and September to October, while the monsoon season (July-August) should be avoided due to the risk of landslides.
The temperature during the yatra varies depending on the altitude. In Kedarnath, temperatures range from -5°C to 15°C. In Badrinath, the temperatures are a bit milder, with averages ranging between 5°C to 20°C. Night temperatures can drop significantly, especially in higher altitudes, so be prepared for colder evenings.
Kedarnath Temple stands at an altitude of 3,583 meters (11,755 feet). Badrinath Temple is located at a height of 3,133 meters (10,279 feet). These altitudes make it an awe-inspiring yet challenging pilgrimage for devotees.
The Kedarnath-Badrinath Yatra usually spans 8 to 10 days. It typically includes: 1 day for arrival in Haridwar/Rishikesh, 2 days for Kedarnath, 2-3 days for Badrinath, and additional days for travel and rest days.
The Kedarnath-Badrinath Yatra is moderate in difficulty due to the steep climbs and high altitudes. While the Kedarnath trek involves a 16-km walk from Gaurikund, Badrinath is accessible by road, but the journey can be strenuous due to the high altitudes and narrow mountain paths.
The yatra season for Kedarnath and Badrinath begins in May, after the opening of the temple doors, and runs until October before the temples close for the winter months.
Indiantreks offers comfortable transportation options such as Bolero, Tempo Traveler, or similar vehicles for smooth travel from Haridwar/Rishikesh to Kedarnath and Badrinath. Road travel is mostly by SUVs and buses for group tours.
For the Kedarnath trek, it's best to wear sturdy, comfortable, and waterproof trekking shoes like Woodland or Forclaz 500, which offer excellent grip and protection for high-altitude trekking. Avoid regular sports shoes as they may not provide the required support for the terrain.
You should carry: Warm clothing (thermals, fleece jackets), Raincoat or poncho, Comfortable, waterproof trekking shoes, Walking stick/trekking poles, Sunscreen, lip balm, and sunglasses, Personal medicines, Toiletries (toothbrush, toothpaste, hand sanitizer), Torch with extra batteries, Water bottle (insulated), Identity proof, Power bank for your phone.
It's recommended to carry a small, lightweight backpack (around 6L to 8L), keeping only essential items like personal medicines, water bottle, camera, and snacks. Larger bags should be left at base locations or in hotel storage.
In Kedarnath and Badrinath, the temperatures can be cold, especially at night. During the day: 15°C to 20°C. At night: -5°C to 5°C. It is advisable to carry warm clothing, including thermals and jackets, as temperatures can drop unexpectedly, particularly in the evenings and at higher altitudes.
