Everything you need to know about Leh Ladakh Trip With Turtuk
The best time to visit Ladakh is from May to September when the weather is pleasant with temperatures ranging from 10°C to 25°C during the day and 0°C to 10°C at night. This is when all roads and passes are open and accessible.
Leh can be reached by air (direct flights from Delhi, Mumbai, etc.) or by road via two routes: 1) Srinagar-Leh Highway (via Zoji La Pass) and 2) Manali-Leh Highway (via Rohtang and other passes). Both road routes take 2-3 days with acclimatization stops.
The Leh Ladakh trip is moderate difficulty due to high altitude (Leh at 11,500 ft, Khardung La at 18,380 ft). Proper acclimatization is essential. The drives are long but roads are generally well-maintained during the season.
Turtuk is India's northernmost inhabited village in the Nubra Valley. It was under Pakistani control until 1971. Turtuk offers unique Balti culture, traditional wooden houses, apricot orchards, warm hospitality, and stunning views of the Karakoram Range - relatively untouched by mainstream tourism.
Key attractions include: Nubra Valley with Hunder sand dunes and Diskit Monastery, Pangong Lake (iconic blue high-altitude lake), Turtuk village (northernmost inhabited), Leh Palace, Shanti Stupa, Hemis Monastery (largest in Ladakh), Thiksey Monastery, Magnetic Hill, and confluence of Zanskar and Indus rivers.
Ladakh offers hotels, guesthouses, homestays, and tented accommodation. In Leh: hotels and guesthouses. In remote areas like Turtuk and Pangong: homestays and basic tented accommodation providing authentic experiences. Advance booking recommended during peak season (June-August).
For altitude: 1) Rest on first day for acclimatization, 2) Drink plenty of water (3-4 liters daily), 3) Avoid smoking and alcohol, 4) Eat light meals, 5) Carry AMS medication (Diamox) after consulting a doctor, 6) Ascend gradually and don't overexert, 7) Monitor for AMS symptoms (headache, nausea, dizziness).
