Everything you need to know about Leh Trip With Turtuk
The best time to visit Ladakh is from May to September when the weather is pleasant and roads are open. During this period, temperatures range from 10°C to 25°C during the day and can drop to around 0°C to 10°C at night. The roads from Manali and Srinagar are typically open from late May to early October.
Leh can be reached by air (direct flights from Delhi, Mumbai, and other major cities) or by road via two routes: 1) Manali-Leh Highway (via Rohtang Pass and Khardung La Pass), 2) Srinagar-Leh Highway (via Zoji La Pass). Both road routes offer spectacular scenic drives and take about 2-3 days depending on stops for acclimatization.
The Leh trip is considered moderate difficulty due to high altitude (Leh is at 11,500 ft). Proper acclimatization is essential to avoid altitude sickness. The drives involve crossing high passes but are generally well-maintained during the season.
Turtuk is India's northernmost inhabited village and is part of the Baltistan region. It was under Pakistani control until the 1971 war. Turtuk offers a unique cultural experience with Balti heritage, apricot orchards, and stunning views of the Karakoram Range. It's relatively untouched by mainstream tourism.
Key attractions include Nubra Valley (with Hunder sand dunes and Diskit Monastery), Pangong Lake (shimmering blue high-altitude lake), Leh Palace, Shanti Stupa, Hemis Monastery (largest in Ladakh), Thiksey Monastery, Magnetic Hill, confluence of Zanskar and Indus rivers at Nimoo, and the unique culture of Turtuk village.
Ladakh offers a range of accommodation options including hotels, guesthouses, homestays, and camping. In remote areas like Turtuk and Pangong, basic homestays and tented accommodation provide an authentic experience. Advance booking is recommended during peak season (June-August).
For altitude: 1) Take rest on first day for acclimatization, 2) Drink plenty of water (3-4 liters per day), 3) Avoid smoking and alcohol, 4) Eat light meals, 5) Carry Diamox (AMS medication) after consulting a doctor, 6) Ascend gradually and don't exert yourself, 7) Monitor for AMS symptoms (headache, nausea, dizziness).
