Everything you need to know about Manali Leh Srinagar With Turtuk
The best time for this epic road trip is from June to September when all passes (Rohtang, Zoji La) are open and roads are accessible. The Manali-Leh highway typically opens in late May/early June, and the Srinagar-Leh road may close earlier due to snowfall on Zoji La Pass.
This is an 11-day journey covering Manali to Leh via the Manali-Leh Highway (Day 1-4), exploring Leh and surrounding areas (Day 5-8), then Leh to Srinagar via the Srinagar-Leh Highway (Day 9-11). Total distance is approximately 1,200-1,400 km depending on the exact route and detours.
This road trip is considered moderate to difficult due to high altitude (Leh is 11,500 ft, Khardung La is 18,380 ft), challenging road conditions with steep climbs and hairpin bends, and long driving days. Proper acclimatization is essential. However, the roads are generally well-maintained during the season.
Key high passes crossed include: Rohtang Pass (13,050 ft), Baralacha La Pass (16,040 ft), Lachulung La (16,616 ft), Taglang La (17,582 ft), Khardung La (18,380 ft - one of the world's highest motorable roads), and Zoji La Pass (11,575 ft - gateway to Kashmir Valley).
Main attractions include: Turtuk (India's northernmost village), Nubra Valley with Hunder sand dunes and double-humped camels, Pangong Lake camping, Leh Palace, Shanti Stupa, Hemis Monastery, Thiksey Monastery, Magnetic Hill, confluence of Zanskar and Indus rivers, Dal Lake with Shikara ride, Mughal Gardens in Srinagar, and diverse landscapes from green valleys to cold desert to Kashmir's paradise.
Accommodation varies by location: Hotels and guesthouses in Leh and Srinagar, homestays in Turtuk and remote areas, tented accommodation/camping at Pangong Lake, and basic guesthouses in Nubra Valley. The trip offers a mix of comfort and authentic local experiences.
For altitude on this extended trip: 1) Take proper acclimatization breaks in Manali and Leh, 2) Stay hydrated (3-4 liters water daily), 3) Avoid smoking and alcohol, 4) Eat light meals, 5) Carry AMS medication after consulting a doctor, 6) Ascend gradually and don't overexert, 7) Monitor for AMS symptoms (headache, nausea, dizziness), 8) Descend if symptoms persist.
