Everything you need to know about Srinagar Leh Manali Trip With Turtuk
The best time for the complete Srinagar-Leh-Manali circuit is from June to September when all passes (Zoji La, Khardung La, Taglang La, Rohtang) are open and roads are accessible. This period offers stable weather with clear views of the mountains.
This 10-11 day journey starts from Srinagar, crosses Zoji La Pass to enter Ladakh, explores Leh and surrounding areas (Nubra, Pangong, Turtuk), then exits via Manali-Leh Highway crossing multiple passes to reach Manali. Total distance is approximately 1,200-1,400 km.
This road trip is moderate to difficult due to high altitude (Leh 11,500 ft, Khardung La 18,380 ft), long driving hours (6-10 hours per day), and challenging terrain. Proper acclimatization in Leh is essential. Roads can be rough and narrow with steep climbs.
Major passes crossed include: Zoji La (11,575 ft - gateway to Ladakh), Khardung La (18,380 ft - one of world's highest motorable roads), Taglang La (17,582 ft), Lachulung La (16,616 ft), Baralacha La (16,040 ft), and Rohtang Pass (13,050 ft). Each offers spectacular views.
Key highlights include: Kashmir Valley with Dal Lake and Mughal Gardens, Turtuk (India's northernmost village), camping at Pangong Lake, Nubra Valley sand dunes with double-humped camels, ancient Ladakhi monasteries, Shanti Stupa, Leh Palace, and experiencing diverse landscapes from paradise valley to cold desert.
Accommodation varies: Hotels and houseboats in Srinagar, hotels and guesthouses in Leh, homestays in Turtuk and remote villages, tented accommodation at Pangong Lake, and basic guesthouses in Nubra Valley. Mix of comfort and authentic local experiences.
Preparation includes: physical fitness for long drives, proper acclimatization for high altitude, carrying warm layers (down jacket, thermals), sun protection, medications including AMS medication, staying hydrated (3-4 liters daily), and being prepared for basic facilities in remote areas.
