Discover Karnataka's ultimate 7-day heritage and coastal circuit: Hampi ruins, Badami rock-cut caves, Dandeli river rafting, and Gokarna beach trek.

Karnataka is one of India's most geographically and culturally diverse states, boasting centuries of monumental empire-building alongside untamed river rapids and tranquil Arabian Sea coastlines. This 7-day Grand Karnataka Heritage and Coastal Circuit connects four extraordinary worlds: the surreal boulder-strewn UNESCO ruins of the Vijayanagara Empire in Hampi, the 6th-century rock-cut cave temples of the Chalukyas in Badami and Pattadakal, the adrenaline-pumping white-water rapids and teak jungles of Dandeli, and the sacred cliffside beaches of Gokarna. If you are planning an epic road journey starting from Bangalore, this circuit combines the historic journey featured in our Bangalore to Hampi road trip guide with the coastal adventure outlined in our Bangalore to Gokarna road trip route.

Days 1 & 2: The Surreal Boulder Kingdom of Hampi

Depart early from Bangalore along NH48 and NH50 to reach Hampi (340 km / 6 hrs). Located along the banks of the Tungabhadra River, Hampi was the 14th-century capital of the Vijayanagara Empire, one of the richest medieval empires in the world. Settle into a riverside stay and consult our 2-day Hampi ruins itinerary.

Begin your exploration at the still-active 7th-century Virupaksha Temple with its soaring 160-foot Gopuram. Walk up Hemakuta Hill to admire pre-Vijayanagara monolithic shrines and watch a magical golden sunset over miles of rust-colored granite boulders. On Day 2, wake up early for a hike up Matanga Hill, the highest point in Hampi, for an unparalleled 360-degree sunrise view. Afterward, visit the world-famous Vijaya Vittala Temple, home to the iconic monolithic Stone Chariot and musical pillars that resonate with musical notes when tapped. In the afternoon, tour the Royal Enclosure, the Queen's Bath, the stepped tank (Pushkarani), and the Indo-Islamic Elephant Stables.

Day 3: Chalukyan Rock Architecture in Badami & Pattadakal

Drive northwest from Hampi to the ancient Chalukyan capital of Badami (140 km / 3 hrs). Nestled in a red sandstone gorge surrounding the tranquil waters of Agastya Lake, Badami is renowned for its four magnificent 6th-century rock-cut cave temples. Cave 1 features an eighteen-armed dancing Nataraja in 81 unique Bharatnatyam poses, Cave 2 and 3 showcase colossal reliefs of Vishnu as Varaha, Trivikrama, and Narasimha, while Cave 4 is dedicated to Jain Tirthankaras.

Walk around the lake's edge to the 7th-century sandstone Bhutanatha Temples, appearing as if emerging directly from the water. In the afternoon, visit the UNESCO World Heritage complex of Pattadakal on the Malaprabha River, representing the harmonious confluence of Dravidian and Nagara temple architectural styles, before resting overnight in Badami.

Day 4: Dandeli Adventure & Kali River Rafting

From Badami, drive west into the dense, misty Western Ghats forests of Dandeli (160 km / 3.5 hrs). Check into a riverside adventure resort and follow recommendations from our 2-day Dandeli adventure itinerary.

Embark on an exhilarating 9-kilometer Class II and III white-water rafting expedition on the surging Kali River, tackling thrilling rapids like "The Snag" and "Stanley's Squeeze". In the late afternoon, take a peaceful coracle boat ride or a guided jungle trail in the Dandeli Wildlife Sanctuary, famous as an important habitat for the Great Pied Hornbill, Malabar giant squirrels, black panthers, and crocodiles along the river islands.

Days 5 & 6: Gokarna Beach Trek & Coastal Shrines

Descend from the jungle heights down the western slopes of the Sahyadri to the pristine coastal pilgrimage town of Gokarna (85 km / 2 hrs). Check into a beachfront cottage along Kudle or Om Beach.

On Day 5, follow our popular 2-day Gokarna beach trek itinerary. Hike the picturesque 8-kilometer cliffside trail connecting Gokarna's five iconic beaches: Gokarna Main Beach, Kudle Beach, the sacred Om-shaped Om Beach, secluded Half Moon Beach, and rocky Paradise Beach. Enjoy swimming in gentle Arabian Sea waters, dolphin-spotting boat trips, and fresh seafood shacks along the shore.

On Day 6, visit the sacred 4th-century Mahabaleshwar Temple housing the Atmalinga of Lord Shiva. In the afternoon, take a short coastal excursion south to Mirjan Fort, a 16th-century laterite fortress draped in green moss and surrounded by moats, built by Queen Chennabhairadevi (the "Pepper Queen"). Continue 35 km further south to Murudeshwar to marvel at the world's second-tallest Shiva statue (123 feet) and the 20-story Raja Gopuram jutting into the Arabian Sea on Kanduka Hill.

Day 7: Gokarna to Bangalore Return Drive

Enjoy a final morning swim in the sea and a relaxed breakfast at a clifftop cafe overlooking Om Beach. Embark on the return drive to Bangalore (485 km / 8.5 hrs) via Honnavar, Sagar (with an optional quick detour to Jog Falls), Shimoga, and NH48, completing an unforgettable 7-day heritage and coastal journey.

Best Season to Plan this Circuit

  • October to March (Peak Season): The most pleasant weather across all destinations. Hampi and Badami have comfortable sunny days (24°C–30°C), Dandeli river rafting is fully operational, and Gokarna has clear blue waters ideal for beach trekking.
  • June to September (Monsoon): Hampi and Badami get hot and humid, but Dandeli turns into a lush green wonderland with high-volume river rafting. Gokarna beaches experience rough sea conditions with swimming restricted.
  • April to May (Summer): Temperatures in Hampi and Badami regularly cross 38°C–42°C. Not recommended unless focusing strictly on beach and jungle stays.

Route Preparation & Travel Essentials

  • Footwear: Carry sturdy running or hiking shoes with good grip for climbing boulders in Hampi and walking rocky cliff trails in Gokarna, plus comfortable water sandals for river rafting in Dandeli.
  • Temple Attire: Virupaksha Temple in Hampi and Mahabaleshwar Temple in Gokarna require modest traditional dress (shoulders and knees covered; dhoti/trouser and shirt for men, salwar/saree for women).
  • Driving Strategy: NH48 and NH50 are high-speed multi-lane toll highways. Mountain stretches between Badami, Dandeli, and Gokarna are scenic two-lane roads with gentle curves.
